Welcome to room 2 2019
Kia Ora and welcome to our class page. Room 2 is a delightful class of students from year 3-5. Our class page is a place where we share news and information with our community and celebrate the learning of our awesome tamariki.
Whitbait connection:
This week our senior classes were doing stream studies in our gully stream called Mangatoetoe with Amber from whitebait connection. We tested water clarity, water temperature and velocity. We also studied the wildlife in our stream. Unfortunately, we found a lot of unwanted rubbish and glass in the water, our Enviro Group is going to look at ways we can do to keep our stream clean.
Learning about the Water cycle:
As part of our inquiry in to 'Water of Life' we looked at the water cycle. We learnt about precipitation, evaporation, condensation and collection. Room 2 made their own mini water cycle so we could see first hand how the water cycle works.
Zero waste week:
This week we had Ali on from zero waste teaching us about composting. We learnt all about food waste and how we can reduce it. We finished the week by making our very on worm farms in milk bottles.
Duffy granparents day:
Today we had Duffy Grandparents day. We invited invited Grandparents to come and spend some time with us in class. We had a special assembly where we sang the duffy song and our school song, on lucky Grandparent won a duffy book. The staff put on a morning tea for all of our amazing Grandparent's.

Stone Soup:
This week we read the story 'Stone Soup'. We decided that it would be awesome to make our own stone soup as part of our healthy eating inquiry. We all brought in a vegetable to put in the soup and made soup for our class and all of the staff at school. It was delicious!
Term 3 gymnastics:
This term we have been learning a floor routine for gymnastics. We have learnt several techniques such forward roll, squats, candle, front support, back support and L sit.
Project Energize- Healthy Lunchboxes!
This week we had Leah from Project Energize in class to teach us about healthy lunchboxes. We learnt about our different food groups and food that makes us go, glow and grow.
Eating bugs!
Room 2 made caterpillars and other creepy crawlies out of fruit and vegetables as part of our Hauora inquiry. We use different types of fruit and vegetables and cream cheese and peanut butter to stick them together. Guess what...They were delicious.
Fruit Art:
This week we looked at healthy eating. We each chose a fruit that we wanted to create as a piece of art. We focused on different shades of the same colour. We used Resene paint swatches to show the different shades of each colour. Room 2 framed our art and we are creating our very own art gallery in our room.

We are all so excited to be back after our two week break. Below is a class newsletter outlining what we will be doing in Room 2 this term!
Our final stop-USA:
We finished our inquiry 'Around the World in 80 Days' , in the USA. We learnt about independence day and why it is important to the USA. To celebrate we made our own fireworks art and finished the week with yummy American Hot Dogs! We absolutely loved our inquiry and learning about different countries. Room 2 now has so much knowledge about different countries from around the world. We all hope we get to visit them one day!
Our 'visit' to Japan:
This week we stopped in Japan. We had so much fun learning the art of origami. We made frogs, dogs, cats and even fish. It seemed like it was going to be really hard at first but we had so much fun once we got the hang of it.
'Visiting' Honk kong:
This week we learnt all about Honk Kong and the Chinese New Year. We learnt about the different zodiac signs and the story of the Chinese New Year. To celebrate we made Chinese New Year dragons.
OUr New Baby chickens:
This week we welcomed 5 beautiful baby chickens into our Room 2 whānau. We are so excited to watch them grow and learn to take care of them in class.
Room 2's Henna Tattoos:
Room 2 was lucky enough to have one of our parents come in and paint henna tattoos on our hands. What an awesome experience! Thanks Kahina!
'Visiting' India:
This week we 'visited' India! What an amazing country it is! We learnt about Diwali, Rangoli patterns and got to make our very own butter chicken!!
'Visiting' egypt:
This week our class 'stopped' at Egypt on our Journey around the world in 80 days. We learnt about the pyramids, mummies, pharaoh's and lots of other interesting things about Egypt. We created our own pharaoh headdress with chalk and learnt how to write our names in hieroglyphics. We had so much fun!
Our new karakia:
This term our school is focusing on a new karakia that we are all learning in our morning hui.
Our first stop on our journey 'around the world in 80 Days'!
For the past two weeks we have been learning about England and the United Kingdom. We learnt about the different celebrations each country has in the United Kingdom and some symbols that represent these countries. We made a St George shield with symbols from each country; a daffodil for Wales, a rose for England, a Shamrock for Ireland and a Scottish thistle for Scotland. We learnt about St David's day, St Patricks day, St George day and St Andrews day. To finish of our 'visit' to the United Kingdom we had a high tea with food from each of these countries; scones, sandwiches, welsh cakes, shortbread and lucky charm popcorn.

This week have spent time making flowers and poems for out special Mum's, Aunties and Nan's in our lives. This morning we had our Mum's come into class and help us with some of our art. We also had a special mothers day assembly and morning tea for all of our awesome Mum's!
Room 2 Gully inquiry-camping area
Last year our school made a Vision Map for our gully, this term we chose an inquiry from the vision map to focus on for the term. We decided that it would be awesome to create a camping area in our gully. Today we started planning where we might have our camp area and what we might include in our camping area.
Paper Mache Hot air balloons:
Today we started to make our hot air balloons to start off our inquiry of 'Around the World in 80 Days'. We can't wait to see the finished results!
Term 2 Newsletter:
exploring our gully:
We have been exploring our beautiful gully this term. Our senior students are about to start an inquiry into our gully and are hoping to improve its environment and look after the native animals and trees in it. We hope to create learning spaces throughout our gully so all students can enjoy it.
Year 5 & 6 aongatete camp:
Our year 5 students joined the rest of the senior school on our bi-annual Aongatete camp at the end of term 1. Students did lots of awesome activities including; visiting Tapuna Quarry park, archery, rock climbing, challenge course, bivouac building, burma trail and Katikati bird gardens.
Room 2's thinking club:
Some of our students have been working with Miss Martin in our 'Thinking Club' every Friday this term. These students have been learning about Rube Goldberg machines and have been planning, creating and testing their own versions of these machines.
Our Mindfulness Pillows:
Room 2 is learning to practice mindfulness in class. We have learnt all about the benefits of being mindful and have been working on mindfulness everyday in class. Our pillows help us to relax and be comfortable during our mindfulness time.

Busy, Busy, Busy!
We have had an extremely busy start to the year here in Room 2!
We got into our gardens and got them ready to plant with new plants for the year, our garden is going to be a Rōngoa garden (healing plants).
We have also been practicing for our school swimming sports in week 4, we have been learning about pool safety and have been practicing our swimming skills.
